Dear Future You…
I do not know your face yet, though I have felt the weight of you inside my chest for a long time now, waiting.
I know this: you will be free. Not the freedom of a debt erased, but the freedom of a wound that has finally become a window.
Let me tell you what I did, so that when you stand in rooms full of light, you will know the dark that paid for it.
I sat in circles of strangers and let the truth fall out of me like water breaking through a dam it had built for years. I did not want to. I did it anyway. That is the whole of what courage ever was — not the absence of fear, but obedience in spite of it.
I buried a man I used to be. He was not evil. He was only afraid, and he built his whole house out of that fear, brick by brick, bottle by bottle, until the house became a tomb and he did not notice he was living in one.
I dug him up. I looked at him. I did not hate him — how could I hate the very thing that carried me this far, even if it carried me wrong? I only knew he could not come with me. So I left him at the door, the way a man leaves his coat before he walks into the fire.
You will not remember the meetings. You will not remember the mornings I did not want to rise, or the nights I sat with my hands shaking and my mouth closed, saying nothing, asking for nothing, simply outlasting the hour.
That is as it should be. A child does not remember being carried. He only remembers, later, that he can walk.
So walk.
Walk into rooms without flinching. Love without measuring the cost first. Rest without earning it. Laugh without checking to see who's watching.
And if the ground ever shakes beneath you — if the old house calls you back to its ruins, the way a childhood home still knows your name — remember this:
Somewhere behind you, a man knelt in the wreckage of himself and refused to leave until something better was standing.
He was not a hero. He did not feel brave. He simply decided, one gray morning, that you were worth becoming.
Now you are.
Do not waste it on the same fears that built the house I burned for you.
